Registering users

When a would-be user completed the registration form, they are sent a link to confirm their email address and once they have followed the link, admin is sent an email Ovni Owners account application.

Log in as administrator and decide whether to accept the registration, ask for clarification or reject it.  Assuming you accept it, proceed as follows for regular users.  See later for guest observers.

  1. Open New User and insert their details: both names, and email address. Their user name should be their boat name, simplified to all lower case.  Use an underscore for any necessary space.  Deselect Send user notification.  Remember the user name.  Create the user account.
  2. Locate and open their user entry.  A short cut is available top left.  Otherwise select from the list of All users.  It is best to search on their user name.
  3. Towards the bottom of the user profile, select ‘Participant’ for the user forums role.
  4. Select the Extended Profile tab and enter details from the application.

Hi Eric,

Your application for an account on the Ovni Owners website has been approved and your account set up.

Your username is: ericzon

You login using your registered email address, which is the one to which this email has been sent.

To obtain your password, please follow this link and enter your email address.  You will be emailed a link to set your password.  If you do not see it, please check in your spam filter.

The site is used to discuss, amongst other things, the technical issues that inevitably arise from time to time, as they would for any type of yacht.  Ovni owners have a strong brand loyalty and do not want such discussions to become the talk of the marine press or used by competitors to undermine the Ovni brand.  You are asked to respect this confidence.

We have a policy of not allowing the site to be used for buying or selling Ovnis.  The reason is that the Ovni owners gain a huge amount from the support of North Sea Maritime  (NSM) – the UK agents for Alubat, who put in a lot of work on our behalf.  But they rely on their brokerage role for their business and the community does not want to undermine them by drawing away the business of selling Ovnis.  The consensus is that this would be to the detriment of the community as a whole.

I am approving your account with the following provisos…

  • You are shown as Guest observer
  • Please do not show in your profile that you are seeking to buy an Ovni – the concern is that, were you to do so you might have an approach which could have otherwise gone through NSM
  • As a guest observer, you are not able to raise your own queries.  We would be over-run with questions from the curious.  But once you have purchased an Ovni you will be welcome as a full member.
  • You can send and receive messages directly to other members, including me

I strongly suggest you contact North Sea Maritime (who usually have Ovnis for sale) if you have not already done so.  They have experience of almost every model.  Please mention your guest status on this site.

Please take a few minutes to browse through the About pages, which describe the capabilities of the site.

You may wish to browse the forums to see what has been discussed on the site. By default you will have been subscribed to most forums, so you will get an email alert when a new topic is posted. You can unsubscribe from forums to stop getting these emails.

I hope you find the site useful and find a suitable Ovni. As soon as you have purchased an Ovni or exchanged a contract to do so, please resubmit your application giving details of your boat and saying you are a guest observer.  I will then upgrade you to full membership. I look forward to seeing you as a full member of the site.

kind regards

Tony

Upgrading a guest observer to full membership

When a guest observer purchases an Ovni, their account can be upgraded to that of a full member.  The following actions are needed:

  1. Change the account name to be that of their boat.
  2. Change their handle to be their forename – boat name as for other full members.
  3. Change their WordPress Role to Contributor
  4. Change their Forum Role to Participant
  5. Send them an email notification as below:

Hi Tim,

Congratulations on your purchase of an Ovni.

Your account on the Ovni Owners website has been upgraded to a full member.

The site convention is that a user name is the boat name, so your username is now: titanic

Your password is unchanged.
